Sometimes the simplest looking things are the most difficult master. My “Black Chinese Orchid” is made up of ten strokes. The stem is one long bone stroke divided by lifting the brush as I painted. This is one of the most difficult paintings I have ever produced.

“Black Chinese Orchid” is one of the five “Gentlemen” topics that all Chinese brush artist wish to master. In Chinese art, the Four Gentlemen, also called the Four Noble Ones, are four plants: the plum blossom, the orchid, the bamboo, and the chrysanthemum.
